Lake Mburo National Park
Covering a size of 370 square km and altitude of 1,220m - 1,828m above sea level, the wetland habitats of Lake Mburo National Park comprise 20% of the park’s surface.
With its rich variety of habitats like sculptured landscape, dry hillsides, bushy thickets, rocky outcrops, open and rich acacia wooded savannah, forest, idyllic lake shores and swamps, it’s home to a diversity of flora and fauna. Being home to the largest population of zebra in Uganda sketchy at about 5,000 and probably holding the highest concentration of leopard found anywhere in Uganda the very common wildlife sighting are buffalo, waterbuck, topi and warthog. In night game drives hyena, genet, bush pigs and white-tailed mongoose are often seen.
The centre of the Mburo National Park is Lake Mburo, which together with 14 other lakes in the area, forms part of a wetland system. A wide variety of wetland birds, as well as the shy, rare sitatunga antelope resides in the swamps. It’s really a delightful experience to take a boat out and enjoy the beauty of the lake watching the giant hippos, incredible African fish eagles, some ferocious crocs, infrequently seen African finfoot and white-backed heron amongst many other water birds.
20% of the park's entrance fee is used for the support of local community projects such as building schools, hospitals and other developing projects.
